Madison County Bridge No. 502 carries 8th Street over the White River in Anderson, Indiana. The existing bridge has an ADT of nearly 15,000 vehicles per day and serves as a gateway into Downtown Anderson. The U.S. Department of Transportation selected this project in 2016 as one of 40 approved projects out of 585 submitted projects, as a recipient of funds through the highly competitive Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant Funding Program. The total project cost is an estimated $18 million, of which $13.5 million will be funded through the Tiger Grant Program. The existing ten-span, prestressed concrete, I-Beam bridge will be replaced with a new six-span, prestressed concrete, U-Beam bridge which includes a composite concrete deck. The grade of the bridge will be flattened from 6.6% to 4.9%. New sidewalks, ADA ramps, and LED lighting will be added to each side of the bridge to promote safety for non-motorized users.
