Project Description:  The The 82nd Street widening project extended from Hague Road to Sargent Road in Marion County. The existing roadway was widened to either a five-lane road or a four-lane undivided roadway at various locations throughout the project limits. The project was designed to drain with curb and gutter and enclosed drainage facilities. New pedestrian accommodations were added to one side of the entire project length and were also  added to the south side for approximately 40% of the project length. The existing three-span bridge structure over Mud Creek was also widened as part of this project.

Innovative features were incorporated during the design phase to deliver the most efficient and cost-effective outcome for this project:

  • The widened section was created through resurfacing and widening.
  • The existing pavement was analyzed and found to be in adequate condition for the rehabilitation strategy desired.
  • Several Level One Design Exceptions were obtained to justify use of the existing horizontal and geometric.
  • Where the project budget allowed for correction of horizontal curves and maximum gradient, corrections were designed.
  • The sidewalks were placed on an independent profile and alignment for a part of the project to avoid ponding behind the sidewalk and minimize the number of yard inlets that would be required.
  • The roadway is a major utility corridor and carries electric, gas, and water transmission facilities.  Coordination was critical throughout the entire design process with these entities.

Approximate Construction Cost:  $12,000,000
