The team was awarded the Monumental Award for the Indianapolis Cultural Trail: A Legacy of Gene & Marilyn Glick. The Indianapolis Cultural Trail: A Legacy of Gene & Marilyn Glick is a world-class facility combining eight miles of bike and pedestrian paths with existing urban roadways in a safe and practical way while providing connectivity to five major cultural destinations and the entire Indianapolis greenway system. The project includes construction of new, shared paths and sidewalks that incorporates art into public spaces while emphasizing green and context sensitive design. Every intersection required careful consideration between vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. The project was a collaborative effort by the City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works, and Central Indiana Community Foundation.
Hamilton County is connecting communities with the Monon Bridge Main Truss being lifted into place. The trail unites the Monon Trail between the cities of Carmel and Westfield and eliminates an at-grade crossing with the traffic on 146th Street. Hamilton County wanted the bridge to represent the history of the Monon Trail by utilizing a bridge that resembles the railroad bridges of the past. This video shows the placement of the main truss structure over 146th Street.
With years of anticipation, I-69 from SR 64 in Evansville to US 231, near the Naval Surface Warfare Center – Crane Division, was open to traffic on November 19, 2012 at 5 pm.
Ribbon cutting ceremonies were held at both the southern and northern limits of the project. Governor Mitch Daniels was in attendance at the Daviess County ceremony. “Many people said this interstate expansion wouldn’t happen in their lifetime, but it’s here. In addition to opening the road ahead of schedule and under budget, we’re opening greater economic opportunity, faster and safer travel, and improved connectivity,” Daniels said.
United Consulting played a vital role in this new terrain project. United completed front-end design-build documents for 15 bridges on this 55-mile section on a very compressed design schedule. United staff spent relentless hours and showed extreme dedication during the expedited schedule. The end result was well worth the hard effort with yet another successful project completed.
Whether you refer to him as the Bridge Guru, Yoda or just Jerry, one thing is for sure, Jerry Ritchie is a classic. Jerry began his career at United in 1969, when the first man landed on the moon and gas was 35 cents per gallon. A lot has changed in the past 43 years, but Jerry’s commitment to engineering and United Consulting remained constant.
A retirement party was held for Jerry on November 29 with his close family, friends, and co-workers in attendance to honor him. Jerry’s career was noted for not only his bridge expertise, but more importantly, his willingness to share his vast knowledge with young engineers.
Jerry’s contribution to engineering did not go unnoticed. In addition to the countless engineers he helped shape, he received the 2009 Engineer of the Year by the Indiana Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Jerry, we wish you well in the next chapter of your life and we will miss you.
