United
Consulting Engineers & Architects uses the latest
in counting technology to provide the most accurate
data to our clients. Our firm is also capable of
conducting turning movement studies for the determination
of intersection turning movement percentages.
|
| |
Our
firm has been under contract with INDOT for the
past 7 years to complete “as-needed”
traffic counts at various locations throughout Indiana.
Assignments range from single intersections to entire
road corridors which vary in cost and level of complexity.
Also, if warranted, United completes traffic counts
for design projects currently under contract. In
recent years, we have also completed counts for
private developers and hospitals. |

Traffic
counts are generally conducted over a 48-hour period in
accordance with the guidelines established by INDOT and
the current edition of the Traffic Monitoring Guide, U.S.
Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration.
Data is gathered for individual lanes or directions and
can be collected via several different studies: volumes,
vehicle classification, speed, and gaps. Software used in
conjunction with the traffic counters generates traffic
reports that are easy to review and understand. |

United
has been under contract with INDOT for the past 7
years to complete “as-needed” traffic
forecasts at various locations throughout Indiana.
Assignments range from single intersections to entire
corridors which vary in cost and level of complexity.
Traffic forecasts are utilized during preliminary
engineering of a project to assist with the completion
of certain design elements (pavement thickness, turning
lane determination, etc.). In addition, United has
completed traffic impact studies (TIS) for proposed
development. These studies evaluate the impact of
new development on the existing road network. The
TIS can be an effective planning tool allowing for
mitigation measures to be secured prior to the anticipated
impact.

Thoroughfare
planning involves the establishment of standards
(design, right-of-way, etc.) for existing
and future needs of a community along its
roadway network. One of United’s most
notable thoroughfare planning experiences
involved the Indianapolis Thoroughfare Plan
Supplement. The project included the investigation
of 25 missing road segments to the Official
Thoroughfare Plan for Marion County. Issues
investigated during this analysis included
environmental effects, existing & proposed
land uses, neighborhood impacts, and individual
alignment alternatives.
