This
project consisted of the renovation of the historic Garrison
building, which overlooks “The Fort” golf
course at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis. The
Garrison was built at the end of World War II, and was
originally the Officers’ Club for Fort Benjamin
Harrison Army Base. It is now part of one of the historic
districts located within the boundaries of the former
Army post. With its decommissioning in the early 1990s,
a large portion of the base including the Officers’
Club, the golf course and the outdoor training grounds
surrounding Fall Creek was deeded to the State of Indiana
for conversion into a new State Park.
The work included renovating and re-configuring the existing
dining rooms, ballroom and meeting rooms. Space was also
allocated for a new vestibule, lobby, restrooms, and front
desk area. The interior design work included extensive
use of wood paneling and moldings that were sensitive
to the historic nature of the building, but still provided
a fresh appearance. The completed design maintained the
structure’s original function as a meeting and dining
facility while accommodating its new role as the center
of the Ft. Harrison Golf Resort and Conference Center.
The renovation of the Garrison building comprised 13,000
square feet and was completed at a cost of $1.25 million
in April, 1999, for the Indiana Department of Natural
Resources.
